ODNR pauses marine-patrol and buoy grants; Huron to seek alternatives

City staff told the council that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has notified the city of a permanent pause on funding for the marine-patrol grant and that the buoy grant is no longer available due to state budget restraints. Staff described the pause as a ‘‘pause’’ rather than an outright cancellation and said the city will attempt to sustain marine-patrol activities with existing funds and creative measures.
Interim City Manager Stuart Hamilton noted the city had already put $17,000 into the marine-patrol program this year; staff and the police chief said they would keep the program operational to the extent possible and explore options such as selling an older state-donated boat to raise funds. Chief and staff also said they will continue safety and public-education efforts on the water using available money.
Council asked about operating budgets; staff estimated the annual operating budget for the marine patrol at just under $40,000. Staff also said the city will continue to register buoys for residents but will not receive state grant funding to buy or replace buoys for homeowner associations. Staff said they will share procurement details with residents who ask where to buy state-approved buoys.
