Veterans commission seeks outreach, vouchers and support for a veterans treatment court

Michael Wilson, chair of the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs, presented three priorities to the Health and Human Services Committee: expand outreach and education to veterans and veteran service organizations, support planning for a veterans treatment court, and pursue permanent supportive housing vouchers (including HUD‑VASH) for homeless veterans and their families.
Wilson said the commission plans face‑to‑face outreach to local veteran service organizations, a speaker's bureau to present at schools about veterans issues and programs, and updated digital displays and web content to recognize local veterans and provide information on services.
On the veterans treatment court, the commission said it is collaborating with the judiciary, the Military Officers Association and other partners to support Judge Cox's effort to establish a veterans treatment court in county courts, a problem‑solving docket that combines accountability with tailored services for veterans with behavioral‑health or substance‑use challenges.
The commission also urged continued investment in permanent supportive housing vouchers and case management; it cited an estimated 50 homeless veterans in the county and recommended prioritizing vouchers and support over emergency shelter responses when possible.
The commission requested timely appointments to boards and commissions and said it will publish an annual report with data on veterans in the county.
