Commission on People with Disabilities presses ADA enforcement, uniform bus‑stop design and accessible housing

The commission’s representative said the CPD’s two main priorities are (1) increasing community engagement and employment opportunities for people with disabilities and (2) greater enforcement of disability‑access laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act.
On transportation, the commission asked the county to study floating bus‑stop design consistency because differing designs across the county can create confusion and safety risks for riders who are blind or have other disabilities. The commission suggested incentives for taxi drivers to operate accessible vehicles and asked for greater enforcement of accessible parking placards. It also urged funding for new assistive listening technologies such as Auracast broadcast audio to improve hearing accessibility at public meetings and venues.
The commission requested county consideration of the universal‑design legislation recently adopted by Prince George’s County and emphasized ongoing support for the developmental disability supplement used by providers. Members also urged additional funding for respite and caregiver supports and timely recruitment and appointments for boards and commissions.
No votes or formal actions were taken; the commission requested continued engagement with transportation planners and other departments to address consistency issues.
