School committee approves first and second readings of several policies

The Lewiston Public Schools school committee took two procedural votes on Oct. 20 to advance policy revisions.

Member Megan Hurd moved to approve the first read of policies listed A through D; the motion was seconded by Member Phoenix McLaughlin and approved unanimously, according to the meeting record. Committee members said most changes reflected format or placement updates from a new sample policy and that substantive content in most paragraphs remained the same.

The committee then considered a second-read vote on two policies identified in the meeting as GBEC (substance-free workplace) and JIE (pregnant students). Member Hurd moved the second-read motion; a committee member seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

During discussion members noted the volunteer policy language (included among the first-read items) now explicitly permits school committee members to volunteer when they are not the primary responsible party: "I'm glad to see, like, number 6, that talks about school committee members being able to volunteer if they're not primarily responsible," Member Hurd said. Administrators said much of the apparent redlining reflected formatting changes from a new sample policy rather than large substantive edits.

Provenance: The first-read motion appears when the agenda item for policies A–D is called; the second-read vote and clarification on specific policy codes (GBEC and JIE) are recorded later in the meeting. Both votes were recorded as unanimous by voice vote.
