Council authorizes agreement with Iberia Medical Center for firefighter cancer screening

The council approved Resolution 25-123 authorizing the mayor to execute a cooperative endeavor agreement between Hospital Service District No. 1 of Iberia Parish (doing business as Iberia Medical Center) and the City of New Iberia to provide cancer-screening services for the New Iberia Fire Department.
Council members said the screening program responds to elevated cancer risks among firefighters tied to occupational exposures and noted the effort is new and prompted by state action. Council discussed that the program targets firefighters because their occupational exposures have been statistically shown to raise certain cancer risks; one council member asked whether other departments might be included in the future, and the mayor said the law and program are presently focused on fire personnel but that the city would consider additional needs if state requirements change.
The resolution was moved and seconded and then approved; council instructed staff to execute the agreement and incorporate the screening into regular health monitoring for the fire department.
