The New Iberia City Council voted to adopt the city's fiscal year 2026 budget and approved a 4% general pay increase for municipal classified employees effective Nov. 1, 2025.
The budget ordinance (Special Ordinance 2025-2026-01) was opened for a public hearing and adopted after motions by Councilwoman Brooke Marcotte and a second from Councilman Warren White; no public comments were recorded on the hearing. Separately, Resolution 25-120 approved a 4% general increase for municipal classified employees, described in discussion as the usual 2% cost-of-living adjustment plus an additional 2% to help close pay gaps.
Council also adopted Resolution 25-121 to amend the classified employee salary structure so base pay rates increase by 2%. Mayor and council members discussed civil-service constraints that limit rapid reclassification and noted that raising minimums further would require structural changes beyond the council's immediate authority.
The council approved Resolution 25-122, the capital outlay project priority list for submission to the state, which includes repeat requests such as funding for the Dore property, drainage and street engineering, certain park building improvements and a placeholder for an animal shelter. Council members reiterated that priority listing does not guarantee state funding and that specific awards depend on subsequent state decisions.
An ordinance amending ARPA allocations was introduced and a public hearing was set for Oct. 21, 2025; staff said additional ARPA adjustments will be forthcoming as projects and expenditures are finalized.
The city clerk called for recorded votes on these items; the meeting transcript shows the motions carried with no recorded objections during the meeting proceedings.
