Weber County Sheriff urges construction-manager procurement as jail medical-wing schematic completes

The Weber County Sheriff's Office told commissioners that schematic design for a new medical wing is finished and that the next step is contracting a construction manager to produce a cost estimate and move the project into detailed design and construction.
Sheriff's Office staff said the county spent roughly $500,000 on prior work with design firm GSBS and emphasized the need to keep the project moving. According to the sheriff's presentation, the jail currently processes about 70 inmates per day through the medical area; medical and mental-health holding cells have been repeatedly occupied by detainees on suicide watch, creating capacity and treatment problems. The sheriff recommended a direct-supervision pod on the medical/mental-health side, additional staffing and secure ceiling-mounted cameras that cannot be reached by detainees.
County staff said an RFP that would place a construction manager on the project is the immediate next step. Commissioners voiced concern about construction-market volatility and suggested staff consider combining projects or timing procurement to improve competitiveness. No construction contract was awarded at the session; staff said cost estimates and procurement documents will be brought forward for future review.
