Kings County approves plans to extend Dana Drive in Kettleman City to support SR‑41 roundabout construction

The Board of Supervisors on Oct. 21 approved plans and specifications prepared by Caltrans for the Dana Drive extension in Kettleman City and authorized the Public Works Department to advertise the project for bids.
Chief Engineer Mitchell Cabrera said the project will extend Dana Drive from its current terminus near Bernard Drive to connect to State Route 41 at Hubert Way, providing an alternate circulation route during Caltrans' staged roundabout construction at Bernard Drive. Caltrans prepared the plans, specifications and estimates and completed right‑of‑way; the county will lead the construction phase. The estimated construction cost is $1.1 million with 55 working days and the project would be advertised for 30 days with bids to open the week of Nov. 27 and award in January or early February.
Funding will come from Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds and the county Road Fund. The board approved the item on a roll call vote with four supervisors in favor and one absent.
Public comment during the meeting noted Caltrans held community outreach in Kettleman City and that residents generally appreciated anticipated continuous traffic flow during construction.
