Mesa Unified board approves 2024–25 annual financial report; trustees flag capital shortfalls and reserve risks

The Mesa Unified District Governing Board approved the district—s 2024–25 Annual Financial Report (AFR), a statutory filing to the Arizona Auditor General and the Arizona Department of Education, after a presentation and extended board questions about reserves, program-specific funds and accounting classifications.

"This is a reporting package from the Arizona Auditor General," said Mr. Moore, finance staff for Mesa Unified, as he opened the AFR presentation. He told the board the AFR package includes five reports and that the AFR "includes over $7,871,000,000 in total expenditures from all funds." The board voted to approve the AFR after the presentation and Q&A.

Why it matters: the AFR aggregates district revenues and expenditures and informs voters, state agencies and the board how taxpayer and grant dollars were used in the prior fiscal year.
