Council drafts oversight options for Flock Safety tool; DEI commission could help shape community-values resolution

City Council staff have drafted two oversight approaches for the Flock Safety automatic surveillance tool and will bring language and materials back to the council for direction, a City Council liaison told the Mountlake Terrace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission.
"There's 2 directions that staff have drafted language around in terms of oversight of that, the tool that we approved. 1 of them is a subcommittee within this d within the DEI commission, and 1 of them is kind of a reformation of a community police advisory, board that used to exist," the liaison said during the commission meeting.
The liaison said a community-values document was drafted alongside the resolution language and can be shared with the commission. The liaison also encouraged commission members to review the material and offer perspectives before the council takes further steps.
The council liaison framed the item as a forthcoming council discussion; no formal council action on oversight was taken during the commission meeting. The liaison also noted the council will review related materials and accept public input as part of future deliberations.
Separately, the liaison noted other council agenda items that may be of interest to the commission, including a planned ordinance to adopt an urban forest management plan and a presentation on rising public-safety costs. Those items were described as part of the liaison report and were not voted on by the commission.
