City reviewing six proposals for crossing-guard program; council to consider award Nov. 4

Mrs. Vasquez reported Oct. 22 that the City has received six proposals to operate the crossing-guard program. The proposals are under review and staff will recommend one proposer to City Council at its Nov. 4 meeting.
Vasquez said council direction from July 8 requires that contract cost savings be applied to enhancements that "enhance walkability and bicycle improvements citywide with a focus on the intersections adjacent to local schools." Staff added that some infrastructure improvements near schools are already in design, including a traffic signal project and other sidewalk/curb improvements.
The item was informational for the commission; no formal recommendation was required from the Traffic Commission at this meeting. Staff said they are meeting quarterly with the school district on crossing-guard matters and will include crossing-guard status in the annual report to the commission.
What happens next: City staff will bring a contract award recommendation to City Council on Nov. 4. Implementation and any reallocation of savings to pedestrian/bicycle projects will be subject to council approval and available funding.
