Girl Scout proposes "Girl Rising" screening in Mountlake Terrace for Women’s History Month

Emily Francisco, a Mountlake Terrace Girl Scout, asked the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission to help host a community screening of the documentary Girl Rising during Women’s History Month that would be followed by a youth-led discussion and local resource-sharing.

Francisco said the event would "help imagine a better world for girls and women" and proposed inviting partners such as the library, local schools and Girl Scouts to share ways for people to get involved after the film. She also suggested a “wall of inspiration” where attendees could write the names of women who inspire them.

Commissioners heard the proposal during the public comment period. Francisco offered to help organize the screening and encouraged the commission to promote intergenerational conversations about education and opportunity.

The proposal, as presented, included no funding request or firm date; Francisco described the idea as part of her Girl Scout senior project and asked the commission to consider supporting the event and outreach. Local partners named in the comment were the Mountlake Terrace Library, local schools and the Girl Scouts.

The commission did not take formal action on the proposal during the meeting; staff and commissioners discussed other agenda items and outreach plans later in the session.
