The Planning and Economic Development Committee on Oct. 6 recommended approval of a special use permit and a fence‑type variance for 9929 Gregory Road to allow the State Department of Military Affairs to create a parking area to store military vehicles.
Staff explained the proposed outdoor storage lot is north of the village public works garage and that the applicant requested a variance from the usual requirement that outdoor storage areas be surrounded by solid fencing. Instead, the applicant asked to use chain‑link fencing similar to what surrounds military vehicles at the nearby National Guard armory off North Alpine Road. Staff recommended approval of both the special use permit and the fence variance; the Planning & Zoning Commission also recommended approval.
The committee moved and seconded the measures and voted to forward Ordinance 37‑25 (special use permit) and Ordinance 38‑25 (fence variance) to the Oct. 20 village board meeting with positive recommendations.
If the board approves these ordinances, the village will permit the proposed outdoor storage area surrounded by chain‑link fencing for military vehicle storage as described in the application.
