Fayetteville City Schools Director Eric Jones told the board Oct. 2 that federal (FEMA) and state (TEMA) funds for a long-planned school project are available and that the school system has requested additional funds after several qualified bids exceeded the original grant estimate.
Jones said the program appears likely to use a 90 percent federal, 5 percent state, and 5 percent local cost split. He estimated the total project at roughly $13 million and said the school system will cover the local share, which he projected between $2.3 million and $2.5 million. Jones said a formal contract signature and a mayoral letter requesting the additional funds are still required; the school system and TEMA have indicated monies are earmarked but final contract terms and the signature process remain to be completed.
Jones said the school system was prepared to move promptly once contracts are signed and that construction could begin this calendar year depending on federal processing and the impact of any government shutdown on paperwork. He asked the board to review a draft request letter that requires the mayor’s signature and a board motion to proceed once the document is finalized.
Board members requested a written breakdown of the current cost estimates and the funding plan; Jones agreed to email the calculations and supporting documents to board members and staff for review before the next meeting.
