Board schedules public hearings for two rezoning requests including funeral-home crematory

Planning and Codes Director Christy Gentry told the board Oct. 2 that the planning commission recommended two zoning changes and that staff had prepared ordinances and notification letters.
The first application is for 521 Market Street West (R3 to C3). The applicant, Gallant Funeral Home, demolished a single-family house on the lot and seeks commercial zoning to construct a crematory adjacent to its existing funeral-home property. Gentry confirmed notices will be mailed to adjoining property owners and the matter will be advertised prior to the public hearing.
The second request is for 406 Franklin Avenue South (R3 to C3). Owner Jimmy Johnson operates a grandfathered commercial use on the site and seeks to align the zoning with the existing commercial activity so he can expand facilities in the future without increasing the degree of nonconformity.
Gentry said both rezonings will be set as public hearings at the board’s November meeting and all required notices and ordinances are prepared. No rezoning decisions were made Oct. 2; hearings will allow public comment before a formal board vote.
