Classified union president urges board to act after health-plan premium increase

Cindy Crane, who identified herself as president of CSCA Local 1096, addressed the board during public comment and said she represents classified employees including student supervisors, custodial and maintenance staff, campus supervisors, childcare workers and IT staff.
"My members are the lowest paid in the district and are dealing with constant cost of living increases," Crane said. She said employees love their work but that rising insurance costs are forcing some to consider second or third jobs; she told the board that the Kaiser traditional plan has increased by $98 per month for many of her members and called the change a hardship.
Crane said the union has presented a proposal in bargaining they consider fair for members and the district and asked the board to give district negotiators authority to return to the table with a proposal members can accept.
The board did not take immediate action during the meeting; trustees heard the comment during the public-comment period and acknowledged the request.
