Superintendent: district enrollment essentially flat; staff to budget flexible sections for kindergarten

Summary
Superintendent reported October enrollment at 2,327, with middle-school increases at Parker and slight declines at elementary schools. The district budgets conditional sections and reserves positions pending registration, and will provide a multi-year enrollment view on request.
Superintendent Dr. Smith told the board on Oct. 14 that district enrollment stood at 2,327 students, a net decrease of about 11 from the prior comparison point, with growth concentrated at Parker middle school and modest declines at most elementary buildings.
Dr. Smith said the district monitors cohorts, rebalances class sections to maintain effective sizes and budgets an extra section for anticipated kindergarten or other cohort growth. If a projected cohort does not materialize, the district can hold that position and reassign it the next year; if registration exceeds expectations, the district can add approved sections without waiting for a board meeting.
Board members asked for a longer-term enrollment history to better understand trends and demographic constraints. District staff agreed to prepare descriptive enrollment data across multiple years for the board’s review. The superintendent said the district sees the current pattern as a plateau rather than a sharp decline and noted housing inventory constraints that limit large swings in enrollment.
On class-size strategy, staff described a preference for investing in instruction and service sections rather than reducing personnel; the board and administration said they will continue to monitor kindergarten registrations and respond with additional sections if needed.
