Oak Park Planning Commission adopts one-hour meeting timeframe in bylaws

The Oak Park Planning Commission voted unanimously to amend its bylaws to set meeting timing and to task planning staff with structuring agendas so meetings can be completed within one hour.

Planning staff said the amendment implements a change approved in July to move the commission to the first Monday at 6:00 p.m., before the city council meeting, and adds a provision directing staff to review each agenda and determine whether the items can reasonably be handled within a one-hour timeframe. Staff told commissioners that, if an item is expected to exceed the hour, they can schedule a continuation meeting within seven days or set a separate meeting date to handle a larger item without the one-hour constraint.

Commissioners raised questions about the practicality of the limit for large projects; staff responded that, for anticipated long matters, staff would schedule a separate meeting day outside the one-hour constraint. The deputy city clerk conducted a roll-call vote; the motion carried with recorded "yes" responses from Commissioner Walters Gill, Commissioner Teekat, Commissioner Seligson, Commissioner Eiselman, Commissioner McClellan and Commissioner Tongate.

The change becomes part of the Planning Commission—s bylaws; staff will be responsible for implementing the agenda review practice and scheduling continuations as needed.
