Board’s community engagement committee to return with residency framework after parent forums

Members of the Flossmoor School District 161 community engagement committee told the board Oct. 14 that parent forums on standards-based instruction drew about 25–35 parents and that a November forum on social-media safety will offer hands-on demonstrations for families.

Committee members said the forums give parents an opportunity to ask specific questions and help the district anticipate communication needs. Board members praised the events and encouraged scaling the format to reach more families at building-level curriculum nights.

Committee discussion also returned repeatedly to residency verification. Speakers said residency challenges affect enrollment, chronic absenteeism tracking and the use of taxpayer funds. The community engagement committee proposed drafting a framework for how the district handles residency investigations, including what tools and policies should be used and when the matter should be elevated to the board.

The board directed the committee to continue developing recommendations, including specific changes to the residency process and a timetable for implementation; board members noted that comprehensive policy or enforcement changes may be deferred until the district can use them effectively, with one board member suggesting February as a target to have materials ready for consideration.

District staff said the committee will bring a recommendation back to the board after additional committee meetings. The district encouraged residents to attend committee meetings, which are publicly posted, to participate in the process.
