The Wisconsin Rapids School District on Oct. 13 discussed submitting a waiver to the state Department of Public Instruction to allow the 2026–27 school year to begin before Sept. 1, with one proposed start date of Aug. 24, 2026. The administration told the board the earlier start could reduce district transportation costs and give students more preparation time ahead of advanced-placement and college-level exams.
Kathy, reporting for the Educational Services Committee, said the district estimates transportation savings of about $12,782.43 if the district shifts the start to Aug. 24 and concludes the year the Friday before Memorial Day. "For public schools to start before September 1, a waiver must be submitted to the state by 01/01/2026," she told the board (10/06/2025 Ed Services committee report).
