Seneca County health commissioner asks voters to renew levy; outlines services funded

Julie Richards, Seneca County Health Commissioner, told the council the Nov. 4 ballot contains a renewal levy for the Seneca County General Health District that would not increase taxes but would continue current funding of $467,913 per year for five years.
Richards outlined services supported by the levy: emergency preparedness and response (including recent response to a train derailment in Attica), school nursing contracts with Tiffin City Schools and other districts, WIC nutrition and breastfeeding support, vital statistics (birth/death certificates), senior health services, immunization clinics, epidemiology and communicable disease investigations, family planning, nuisance complaint investigations, restaurant and food service inspections and drug prevention education. She said the levy sustains staffing, including a full-time epidemiologist for Seneca County.
Councilor Horniman asked about Tiffin’s representation on the county health board; Richards answered that Tiffin’s population (about 18,000) is roughly one-third of Seneca County (about 55,000) and said several board members live or work in Tiffin. Richards offered lawn signs and informational cards to council members and residents.
No formal council action was taken on the levy during the meeting.
