Residents press council on alcohol licensing and urge recognition of community leaders

Several residents used the public-comment period to raise policy and community concerns.

Virginia Williams of 810 Hamilton Avenue Northeast asked the council to clarify whether beer-and-wine and full alcohol licenses are the same and whether licensing authority is at the state level. Williams said convenience stores commonly sell beer and wine under a distinct license and expressed concern that Black-owned businesses are being treated differently by the city: "Everybody gonna stop the I'm a say it. The black resident you know, businesses from doing what they can do, but it's okay for everybody else to do it." The council and staff replied that alcohol licensing is a state matter and that staff would follow up with more information; George Curtis indicated he would provide additional details to the public.

Multiple speakers offered tributes to local community figures. Yvonne Scott, who identified herself as a 4-H leader and community advocate, praised John W. Another resident said she had researched the criteria for naming a landmark and urged the council to consider naming City Hall after a local figure referenced in comments. Cheryl Pruett and other speakers offered personal anecdotes praising an individual named John for assistance to residents.
