BAR approves painting of 1331 West Main façade after masonry repairs

The Board of Architectural Review on Tuesday approved an application to repaint the exterior of 1331 West Main St., including previously unpainted brick and the metal storefront frame, with conditions calling for proper masonry repointing and priming of metal surfaces.
Jeff Warner, city staff, told the board that the building is locally designated but not a contributing resource in the National Register district. Warner said the existing masonry can be painted successfully if prepared and repointed first, and that anodized metal storefront frames can accept paint when prepped correctly.
The applicant — who described repair work to missing bricks, repointing and primer— offered three color palette options. Board members said they were comfortable approving the repainting and deferred to staff on final paint selection; the motion accepted any of the three supplied color schemes.
The motion (approved by roll call) required that brick be repointed prior to painting, that paint products be appropriate for unpainted brick, and that metal frames be cleaned and primed to ensure quality of finish.
The applicant will proceed with permits and must carry out the masonry repairs before painting. Staff will check final color and finish details under the COA conditions.
