Van Miller, representing the Tool Library of Lake County, described the nonprofit's tool-lending, classes and volunteer-run services during public comment at the Oct. 20 Gurnee Village Board meeting and urged residents to visit and join; no board action was taken.
Van Miller addressed the Gurnee Village Board during the public-comment portion of the Oct. 20 meeting to describe the Tool Library of Lake County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that lends tools, runs fix-it clinics and offers classes.
Van Miller said the organization began in Mundelein and expanded countywide, recording more than 9,600 loans across 42 ZIP codes during its first three and a half years. After losing a larger, free wood-shop space, the organization moved to a smaller rented location and continues to operate largely with volunteers.
"We're open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 to 7, Saturdays, 09:30 to 03:30," Van Miller said, and added the group would begin opening on Mondays 4 to 7 starting Oct. 27. He described programming that has included basic plumbing and electrical workshops, knife- and chisel-sharpening classes, bike maintenance, "Woman and Tools" and community fix-it clinics.
Van Miller said the library has 32 members from Gurnee and charges a $50 annual membership fee, with some larger tools subject to additional maintenance fees. He encouraged trustees and residents to visit during open hours and provided information and media clips about the organization.
No board action was taken in response to the public comment.
