Orange City renews Rotary membership after council debate; appoints Stafford and Knight as delegates

After an extended discussion about the city's $920 annual membership in the Deltona-DeBary-Orange City Rotary Club, the Orange City Council voted Oct. 14 to continue the membership and to name Lisa Stafford and Dana Knight as the city's two designated representatives.
Kaylee Burleson, city clerk, reviewed the membership benefits and the fee breakdown, including district fees and foundation dues. Council members expressed differing views after one council member described a dispute with the Rotary event president about tickets and guest access. Councilmember Lisa Stafford described her long volunteer involvement with the club and said she frequently secures volunteers for city events; other council members said the city should be treated equally if membership is funded with taxpayer dollars.
Bill Wright and Franklin Rodriguez, local Rotary representatives, addressed the council to describe the club's community activities, including mentoring, Backpack Buddies and local service projects. Council discussed payment cadence (quarterly vs. annual) and directed staff to work with the Rotary for annual invoicing if the club prefers.
The motion to renew membership carried by unanimous vote. Council then appointed Lisa Stafford and Dana Knight as the two city appointees to the Rotary Club.
