Council approves $299,135.90 change order for Division Broadway restoration project

Public works staff member Jim Kelly told the council the change order resulted from incorrect and incomplete consultant construction drawings. "This change order...was predicated because of, we received a bad set of construction drawings from the consultant that we hired," Kelly said, and explained that the city put the design work in-house when the consultant would not update drawings.
Kelly detailed items added through the change order: significant grade breaks (as much as 18 inches from existing elevation), curbs without slope that would not drain, missing new driveways to alleys, missing ADA ramps, and missing sidewalk. He said in-house engineer Krista Stewart completed corrected drawings and the contractor and city negotiated fair pricing.
A councilmember asked about project timing; Kelly said phases 1 and 2 were done except for landscaping and striping, phase 3 work was underway and expected to be completed next Friday, and phase 4 would be a small patch at the Olympic intersection; he added, "So, November, we should be ready." The council moved to approve the change order and authorized the mayor to sign; the motion carried with no recorded opposition.
