Knoxville City Council approved on Oct. 13 a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement with CDM Smith Inc. to provide professional design services for the Fort Sanders neighborhood's Tyson Park connection greenway in an amount not to exceed $980,770.
A student speaker, Addison Wyrick, told the council the connection would make it safer and easier for many University of Tennessee students who walk or bike between campus and Tyson Park. Council members described the gap as longstanding and said the project's tunnel under the railroad is a significant design element to achieve ADA accessibility.
City staff said the design phase is currently programmed in the transportation improvement plan and construction would be sought through federal grant funding once design and right-of-way work are complete. Council emphasized coordination with the University of Tennessee on nighttime lighting and safety features; staff noted they will look for grant opportunities to fund construction once the design is finished.
The resolution passed on a voice vote (motion made and seconded; "Motion carries").
