The City Council on Oct. 14 continued an appeal of the planning commission’s denial of an application to allow an internally illuminated Shell logo on a gas station at 2001 Nevada City Highway.
City planner Amy Wilson summarized the background: the station dates to the 1980s, a monument sign was added around 1990, and the applicant applied in August 2025 for a sign‑exception permit that would allow internal illumination on logo signage at canopy locations and the monument sign. Section 17.38.0.05 of the municipal code generally prohibits internally illuminated signage except where a sign exception is granted and the illumination is an integrated design element that enhances building architecture.
Wilson said the Development Review Committee had recommended approval of the internally illuminated price sign and the illuminated logo but recommended denial of a canopy light bar; at the planning commission meeting commissioners voted to approve only the price‑sign illumination and deny the logo illumination. The applicant appealed the latter denial; the applicant was present remotely but could not complete a presentation because of technical issues.
Council members agreed it was appropriate to hear from the applicant directly before making a final decision and moved to continue the appeal to the next regular council meeting. The motion to continue carried by voice vote.
No merits decision was made; the hearing will resume with applicant presentation at a future council meeting.
