Akron City Council voted unanimously Oct. 20 to adopt an ordinance authorizing the use of crushed asphalt grindings as a pavement surface for a vehicle storage area at 1100 Triplett Boulevard, with conditions including a solid fence and landscaping to screen the area from the right of way.
Planning staff said the petitioner, Pro Car Associates, intends to install asphalt grindings over the remaining unpaved portion of the lots to within 10 feet of the sidewalk and to use the area primarily for static storage of vehicles awaiting service. Staff noted that the lot is relatively level and that dust production should be minimal for static storage, but the zoning code requires screening of storage areas. Planning staff recommended approval provided a solid fence be installed 10 feet from the right of way and landscaping be installed per code and an approved plan.
Christopher Wright, owner of Pro Car Associates, told council the property has been in his family since 1976 and apologized for prior disturbance of the lot without permits. He said he is arranging to obtain asphalt grindings and install fencing and landscaping, and asked for leniency to allow the temporary surface until funds are available for a permanent hard surface.
The committee reported favorably with a list of conditions; council suspended the rules and adopted the ordinance, recorded as 11–0 in favor.
