Council approves 12 artworks for Phase 2 of utility-box wrap program

The Torrance City Council approved 12 artworks for Phase 2 of the city’s utility-box wrap program, selecting two designs for each council district from submissions that included community artists and works produced by the city’s MKG Leadership Academy.
Monica Hart of Community Services presented the locations and the Cultural Arts Commission’s recommendation of 12 designs. The Cultural Arts Commission’s slate included works by Adrienne Arias (Goddess of Fish), Cat Trevino (Wave), Felicia Ramirez (Blink), Mary Arakawa (Ocean Depths), Mariah Camille Foston (Wild Haven Madronas Ecosystem) and multiple designs from the MKG Leadership Academy teams created as part of staff professional development. Councilmembers reviewed the packet and made district-specific selections on the record; the mayor and staff confirmed they will verify that each chosen artwork is installed in the correct district and will relocate a District 5 site if needed.
A public speaker congratulated staff and artists, calling the program a visible beautification effort. Councilmember discussion included whether MKG Leadership Academy pieces could be adapted to add additional imagery (for example to represent all military services in a design); city staff and the leadership academy representative indicated they would work with the artists on minor incorporations when appropriate. Monica Hart said the first six boxes should be wrapped by January and all boxes by April.
Councilmembers voted on selections by district; staff will complete implementation and outreach with artists and district offices.
