Human Resources Director Emily Stednick presented results of the city’s Gallup engagement survey at the Oct. 13 Sequim City Council meeting, reporting 86% staff participation and an overall engagement mean of 4.16 on a 1‑to‑5 scale.
Stednick said the city’s percentile rank among local governments is in the low‑80s and that the engaged‑employee count rose from 52 to 59 compared with the prior survey cycle. She highlighted a statistically significant increase on the question about recognition: more employees reported receiving praise for good work. Stednick emphasized that the value of the survey comes from follow‑up conversations and department‑level action plans rather than the raw scores alone.
“Our timeline is: survey in July, directors met with staff in August and September to discuss results, and departments are now working on action plans,” Stednick said. She said most departments have completed action plans and that HR will conduct a midyear update in April and resurvey next July.
City Manager Matt Huish and councilors praised the survey participation and the use of results to drive workplace improvements. Huish also reported HR‑led wellness activity, including a volunteer tree‑planting with the North Olympic Salmon Coalition and an upcoming employee appreciation event in November.
Stednick and staff said department leaders will tailor actions to their teams, balancing confidentiality with meaningful follow‑up. The council received the report as information; no formal council action was recorded.
