Centerville City officials told residents on Oct. 7 that the Mosquito Abatement District board is proposing a 26.18% increase to its property tax rate and will hold a public hearing on Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
The notice, read by the citys legal representative, said the increase would generate about $1 million in additional property-tax revenue across the district. The presentation included an example showing the impact on an average $600,000 home: the district portion of the tax bill would rise from $30.69 to $38.61 annually (an increase of about $7.92 per year).
City staff emphasized Centerville is not proposing the tax increase and that the districts levy appears on the property-tax bill as a separate line item. The city attorney summarized the districts stated purposes for the new funding as construction of pesticide storage facilities, expanded mosquito surveillance and lab capacity, and potential use of new adulticide products.
The council did not take action on the matter; the meeting item was informational to comply with state statutory notice requirements. The Mosquito Abatement District will hold a public hearing on the proposed increase on Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m., and property owners may provide comment at that hearing or through the districts published materials.
