City renews 25‑year Bureau of Reclamation buffer permit around airport; no fee charged

The Riverton City Council approved a renewal Oct. 21 of a special‑use permit from the Bureau of Reclamation covering land that serves as a buffer around the Central Wyoming Regional Airport. The new permit extends use for 25 years and covers approximately 1,000 acres mainly north of the airport and a smaller parcel west of the airport near the weather station. No fee is assessed for the permit; the Bureau of Reclamation waived the fee as in the previous permit.
City staff noted a small portion of the permit area had been considered for a separate WyDOT parcel related to prior US‑26 road work and mill tailings. The city will remain responsible for managing noxious weeds on the leased lands. Council approved the renewal by voice vote.
The permit replacement covers undeveloped Bureau lands that provide a safety and operational buffer for airport activities. Staff said the permit had been managed previously under a 50‑year arrangement that now expires; the new agreement resets the term to 25 years with the same maintenance responsibilities for the city.
