Riverton police seek $281,692 in federal grant to fund body‑worn camera program

The Riverton City Council authorized staff Oct. 21 to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), for the Body‑Worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program. The requested federal share is $281,692.36; the program requires a 50% match from the applicant.
Police staff said a large technology upgrade previously proposed from Axon totals roughly $563,384.71 and includes body‑worn camera hardware and related components. The BJA program is designed to help agencies purchase camera systems, improve digital evidence management and integrate footage into prosecutorial workflows and officer training. If awarded, the grant would reimburse roughly half the anticipated Axon purchase for the city.
Lieutenant Wharton and other police staff assisted preparation of the application. Staff reported that fiscal year 2026 budget planning had anticipated grant funds in the technology upgrade estimate, and submission of the BJA application is intended to secure that revenue stream. Council approved submission of the application by voice vote.
