Washington County proclaims October 2025 Dyslexia Awareness Month

The Washington County Commissioners Court on Oct. 7 approved a proclamation declaring October 2025 Dyslexia Awareness Month.
The proclamation, presented during the court’s meeting, described dyslexia as a neurological condition that can make reading, writing and spelling difficult for otherwise highly capable people and stated that an estimated 15 to 20 percent of the population are affected. The court approved the proclamation by voice vote after a motion and a second; no roll-call tally was recorded in the minutes.
Trudy Rothermel, a member of the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library advisory board who works with the Brenham Library, thanked the court for the proclamation and described her background working with students with dyslexia and training as a certified academic language therapist. County officials and commissioners also shared personal remarks; one commissioner said his youngest son is dyslexic and described the child’s different strengths.
The proclamation text included language noting that dyslexia is highly treatable through early identification and evidence-based reading instruction and listed historical and modern public figures identified in the proclamation as having had dyslexia. The court took the action to formally recognize the month to raise awareness and highlight local resources and events coordinated by the library and community partners.
The proclamation was approved during the meeting’s opening business and was followed by a short photo opportunity with Rothermel and members of the court.
