The Pomona Unified School Board presented Cal Poly Pomona President Soraya Coley with a certificate of recognition on Oct. 15, citing her work to expand college access and community partnerships with Pomona Unified.
Superintendent Knowles and board members praised Coley's efforts including campus field trips for students and programs that supported families. Coley, who said she retired from Cal Poly Pomona in spring 2025, credited partnerships between the university and Pomona Unified for creating pathways to college.
"It wasn't what Cal Poly Pomona did, it was what Pomona Unified School District in partnership with Cal Poly Pomona that made it possible," Coley said.
The board also heard from student representatives from multiple high school marching bands about upcoming adjudicated performances and events. District staff announced that Wendy Arana (Gary High School), Cesar Moreno (Diamond Ranch, tuba), Vincent Salazar (bells) and Jonas Carver (Diamond Ranch, baritone saxophone) were selected to perform with the 2026 Tournament of Roses Honor Band in the Rose Parade on New Year's Day.
Board members and the superintendent thanked the students and band directors for their work and encouraged the community to attend upcoming band reviews and parades.
