Pomona Unified launches P3 initiative to boost Filipino representation and visibility

Pomona Unified leaders and community partners on Oct. 15 introduced P3, an initiative intended to increase Filipino representation, cultural visibility and student supports across district campuses.
Dr. Catherine Murillo Schone, founding chair of P3, said the effort is "more than just a name" and aims to provide platforms for Filipino student voices, amplify heritage and create lasting community partnerships. Dr. Mark Gomez joined as co-chair. Officials described planned activities such as campus displays, literature and poster campaigns during Filipino American History Month, student and parent representation in district decision-making, and partnerships with classified, certificated and community members.
The P3 launch included student and staff introductions and a short musical performance. Speakers emphasized the cultural value of food, shared history and "bayanihan" community spirit, and invited campuses to display educational posters and literature. The initiative will also work with principals to incorporate Filipino-American history and role models into campus visibility activities.
"Filipino students, families and staff have been a part of Pomona Unified's story for decades," Dr. Schone told the board. "P3 isn't just about events or food; it's about representation, belonging and visibility."
The board recognized the group and accepted the launch as a community initiative; no formal board action was required.
