Commissioners approve birding‑themed sculpture at Linda S. Castro Nature Site

Aransas County Commissioners Court on Oct. 1 approved the Aransas Pathways steering committee’s recommendation to place a binoculars sculpture by artist Kurt Cizi at the Linda S. Castro Nature Site. The sculpture and site improvements are funded by a $10,000 donation from Matt Kapora in memory of his mother, Deborah Kapora.
Pathways representatives told the court they solicited public art entries for three months and received more than 25 submissions. The committee selected a sturdy, weather‑resistant binoculars piece (approximately 36 inches) that will be mounted in the pavilion overlooking the pond; the interior of the binoculars will display images of local coastal birds. The group reserved part of the donation for a durable base and installation that will allow youth to step up and look through the binoculars.
Commissioners voted aye on the motion to approve moving forward with the artist and installation; staff said remaining administrative coordination (base design, installation schedule) will follow through county staff and Pathways coordinators.
