Anthony Wayne Local Schools administrators told the board on Oct. 3 that most proposed policy revisions presented for board adoption reflect changes required by Ohio House Bill 96 and recommendations from the district's policy service, Neola.
Superintendent Herman said the administration and a board policy committee reviewed the suggested updates and, where options existed, generally adopted the administration's recommendations. Board member Mike (first name not supplied in the transcript) said some policy changes were ministerial because the district must comply with state law (01:35:55).
On implementation, assistant administrator Burke said the district "ripped the bandage off" by implementing the new cell-phone restrictions at the start of the school year. "The lunch room has been amazing. We have kids who are playing Euchre. We have kids who are playing board games and study halls. They're reading books," Burke reported, adding the policy has reduced device use in hallways and common areas (01:39:49).
Dr. Pfefferly described multi-building committee work to revise attendance procedures and communication letters under board policy 5200 to align with state law and ensure consistent district-wide interventions. "The adoption of the policy itself was relatively easy because it was accepting a lot of language we had to accept if we're gonna follow and being compliant with state law," he said, noting ongoing work to standardize letters and parent communications (01:42:42).
Board members voted to approve the policy updates as part of the consent agenda during the meeting. Superintendent Herman said the district will share details of each amended policy on request.
