La Plata council asks staff to draft reprimand procedures for rules of procedure

Councilman Kevin McCormick asked the Aug. 12 council to request staff draft language that would provide the council with a process to address sustained misconduct or misconduct by a councilmember through reprimand or similar measures.
McCormick said such language should include clear process safeguards. Councilman Johnson urged third-party investigation and that any sanction be based on a sustained finding. Councilman Guttenberg and Mayor James said they were concerned that formal sanction procedures could be weaponized and preferred continued emphasis on decorum and public conversation. After discussion the council voted to ask staff to research and draft potential language for inclusion in the rules of procedure; the motion passed on a 3–2 roll call.
