Dr. Beatrice Toombs, who identified herself as a District 4 resident, told the board she is "delighted about the possibilities of renaming Magruder Elementary School" and suggested the board consider "Bruton Elementary School," citing local history and community identity.
Sam Ray, a District 3 resident, urged the board to "do what is right, not what is easy," and said keeping the McGruder name (speakers used both spellings) "has no place on a public school," arguing that a new name should reflect "learning, belonging, and progress." Ray recommended phasing in costs and aligning signage changes with routine maintenance.
Pam Puccio addressed concerns separate from the renaming topic, criticizing national politics and urging the board to consider the scheduling of meetings on Jewish holidays. Puccio also raised objections to outside content and curriculum trends she described as politically motivated.
Board chair Miss Goodwin closed the public-comment period after the scheduled speakers. No board action on school renaming was taken at the Aug. 25 meeting; the comments were received for consideration.
