York County updates auditorium, gym and ADA renovations; Tab High enters 35% design phase

Chief operations officer James Carroll updated the York County School Board Aug. 25 on summer and ongoing capital projects, saying auditorium and athletic-area work is largely complete and that Tab High School has reached schematic design milestones.

Carroll described completed upgrades at several sites, including new house lighting, seating replacement, epoxy flooring under seating areas, new curtains and new carpets. On the broader work he said, "it's literally night and day there" when showing before-and-after photos of older auditoriums with worn 50‑year‑old seats.

He noted an exception at Tabb High School where carpet replacement and the sound booth remain to be completed; those items, he said, will be finished in about two weeks. Carroll said some sites required ADA-related structural changes — notably widening two middle rows of stairs — which were implemented as change orders.

At York High, Carroll presented restroom and auxiliary gym renovations that include LED lighting, new partitions and upgraded plumbing fixtures, plus epoxy flooring and refreshed paint. For Bruton and Tab auditoriums, he described stairwell work still in progress and a phased completion timeline.

On Tab High larger renovations, Carroll said the architects completed fieldwork and submitted 35% drawings; staff will now engage in value engineering and cost containment as the project moves to more detailed designs.

Board members asked about whether the ADA changes were known before construction; Carroll said the need was discovered during project work and handled as a change order. No vote was required; the item was an informational capital-projects report.
