Taylor Independent School District's foundation presented a series of grants during Monday's meeting to support classroom instruction, fine arts, career-readiness and extracurricular programs.
Grant recipients and purposes announced by foundation representatives included: musical resources (boomwhackers, hand bells and instructional materials); a mobile color-guard station with pop-up pods, portable power stations and microphones for competitions; headsets to support students receiving virtual instruction at the district's alternative or virtual programs; a re-engagement program to support students working toward graduation with academic and nutritional supports and site visits to TSTC and Temple College; and a game-changer grant to establish an esports program at Taylor High School.
Foundation presenters said the esports grant will provide 10 esports PCs and gaming headsets and reported an award amount of $37,186. Staff said the district had agreed to fund robotics while the foundation's award would specifically support esports startup equipment and that the program is UIL-sanctioned and follows a "no pass, no play" eligibility rule.
"This is a win-win for everyone," a foundation representative said, noting the foundation's interest in engaging additional student populations through sanctioned extracurriculars.
No board action was required during the presentation; the grants were presented as awards and recognitions during the meeting's recognitions and foundation-report portion of the agenda.
