Taylor ISD presents first I-Ready screener results: reading gains noted, math lags state trend

Taylor Independent School District staff presented the results of the district's first universal screener administration using I-Ready, describing baseline patterns and next steps for instruction and monitoring.
The staff member said the district chose I-Ready following a multi-stakeholder review and that HB 2, Article 5 requires districts to have a universal screener. Beginning-of-year results show reading-language arts (RLA) measures with higher percentages reaching approaches/meets/masters than math at many grade levels. For example, kindergarten RLA beginning-of-year results included roughly 51% in "approaches," while math showed smaller proportions at comparable levels. Elementary and middle-school RLA scores showed notable strengths: some campuses reported 64% approaches in RLA and double-digit meets and masters entries. Middle-school RLA also produced encouraging masters percentages (e.g., 18% masters in one chart), while math results continued to trail.
Staff said I-Ready places each student on a personalized learning path and that teacher intervention is required when students encounter stop gaps in the program. The district plans a mid-year screener round after the holiday break and will analyze growth as a measure for the district's "1 plus" initiative to ensure students advance by more than one year when targeted.
"This is not strictly an online program where we put students on and teachers are hands off," the presenter said, noting the tool's built-in checks and the district's expectation of teacher-led interventions.
Trustees asked timing questions about the middle-of-year administration and were told the district will collect mid-year data after the holiday break and bring analysis back to the board.
