City approves CDBG-CV funding for Nehemiah Foundation warming shelter; group seeks volunteers

The Springfield City Commission approved a subrecipient agreement to provide Community Development Block Grant-CV funding of $28,499.95 to the Nehemiah Foundation to operate a winter warming shelter at the Salvation Army at 15 S. Plum Street.
Logan Cox, director of community development, said the grant would fund operations that begin when overnight temperatures hit 32 degrees. During those periods the shelter would operate from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. with dinner and breakfast; operations would expand to 24 hours daily if temperatures reach single digits.
Erin Roy, representing the Nehemiah Foundation, said the organization has run orientations and volunteer training sessions and planned additional sessions on Nov. 14 and Nov. 21. Roy said the organization seeks 150 to 180 volunteers and would staff peak evening shifts (6 to about 10 p.m.) with roughly 8 to 12 onsite volunteers and 6 to 8 overnight staff on night shifts. The shelter will provide cots and on-site case management.
Aaron, a Nehemiah representative, said staff are coordinating daytime options and caseworkers with the downtown library branch to offer services and warm space for unsheltered neighbors during daytime hours. Commissioners and staff thanked Nehemiah for its role and approved the funding.
