Whitfield County commissioners approve consent items, capital purchases and annexations; enter executive session on litigation

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 13 unanimously approved a slate of routine and capital items, accepted multiple planning and annexation recommendations and voted to hold an executive session on litigation.

In roll-call votes during the meeting, commissioners approved the meeting agenda and minutes, accepted the August finance report, ratified a $3,371 scrap-tire grant for a county collection event and agreed to a final budget amendment of $57,009.12 to pay for elevator repairs at the Wells Fargo building. Commissioners also declared older pieces of public-works equipment surplus and authorized selling them online.

The board authorized a public-works purchase of a broom/sweeper for $88,700 using 2024 SPLOST funds and approved a sheriff's purchase of 11 crew-cab pickup trucks under the recommended option for $530,002.72, also drawn from 2024 SPLOST funds. Commissioners accepted nine recommendations from the Planning & Zoning Commission; one approval was noted as contingent on completion of a required flood-zone hydrological study before any building permit could be issued.

The board approved two Tunnel Hill and two Varnell annexation requests after the planning recommendations were presented and discussed. Other routine votes included declaring a 2005 fire engine and a sheriff vehicle surplus and authorizing them for auction.
