Student board member highlights college fair, AP scholars and upcoming events

Student board member Elizabeth Corral Moreno told the board on Oct. 20 that recent parent-teacher conferences on Oct. 9-10 had lower in-person attendance but were supplemented by virtual meetings; translation volunteers assisted non-English-speaking families.
Corral Moreno said a college fair held last week hosted 81 colleges and universities and drew more than 1,000 students, who could learn about admissions and application deadlines. She also reported on other student activities: an NHS induction with about 45 new members, a varsity football rivalry and an associated coat drive for winter clothing in partnership with Maddie's March.
During a recognition segment, staff said 139 East Aurora High School students were named AP Scholars for spring 2025 AP exams; 17 students earned AP Scholar with Distinction. Three students were recognized in person: Elizabeth Corral Moreno (student board member), Yuram Huerta and Giancarlo Ledesma. Additional honored students included Jasmine Pina, Zion Laliwala, Jose Herndondo, Mateos Ramirez, Giselle Zaragoza and Diego Gonzalez Trejo.
Superintendent Dr. Halvorsen also announced upcoming events: Parent University on Nov. 8 (with Victor Gomez, 2025 Illinois Teacher of the Year, as keynote), the first annual City of Aurora Illuminate career pathways event for ninth-grade students on Oct. 24 at Waubonsee Community College (Sugar Grove campus), a high-school preACT administration this week, a half-day SIP professional learning day on Oct. 31, and the Great Reading Tournament from Nov. 1–23.
The student report emphasized volunteer involvement and student engagement across school activities. Staff asked the community to support participation in the reading tournament and upcoming events.
