Committee discusses ways to make school-options matrix readable to the public

Committee members discussed how to make a large, information-dense school-options matrix accessible to residents who may not be comfortable viewing complex digital files. Tim Fling, committee member, said the matrix does not fit legibly on standard page sizes and suggested a plotter printout for wall display. "I literally asked them to put this on a plotter, and when they put it on a plotter to print out the size that they could, it took up 2 sheets of paper, and that's what I taped together in the back of the room," he said.

Members considered other approaches: distributing an 11-by-17 "heat up" matrix that fits on a single sheet, providing a PDF on an iPad so residents could zoom in on vector-based text, or breaking the matrix into option-by-option pages for multi-page printing. One member recommended making a physical copy available at town locations where residents commonly visit, such as the library and senior center, noting those venues have wall space for large displays. "If we really wanna do something like that, that might be one of the easier ways to at least start this process," a committee member said.

No formal vote was taken on a permanent dissemination plan. The committee agreed to pursue practical steps: ask staff to reprint a plotter-sized version with improved formatting, consider making an iPad or zoomable PDF available for public viewing, and identify locations in town (library, senior center) where a large printed version could be displayed for several weeks. The committee noted that staff assistance or an administrator would ease the workload of preparing and maintaining public displays.
