Seaford board reviews annual school‑choice rules, approves several applications

Mister Zoll, presenting the Seaford School District’s annual school‑choice report on Oct. 20, told the board that applications for the 2026 window will be accepted Nov. 3 through Jan. 14, 2026, with two standard exceptions: kindergarten applicants may apply until the first day of school, and other applicants may apply after the window if they can demonstrate 'good cause.'
Zoll said continuity within grade bands is typical: students who apply in kindergarten may remain in choice through second grade; third‑grade applicants continue through fifth, and so on. He said principals consider attendance, grades and discipline when deciding whether to extend a student's choice authorization and that principals will complete probation forms and meet with parents before revoking choice status. "To stay enrolled in school choice, the things that we look at, obviously, are attendance, grades, and their discipline records," Zoll said.
On transportation, Zoll said parents are generally responsible for transporting choice students; the district will place students on existing large‑group bus stops or to daycare stops where possible, but it will not create new routes.
Zoll described the statistics as "not finalized" but noted a recent trend and a notable increase in sixth‑grade outbound choices (28 students). Board members asked why neighboring Woodbridge and Indian River showed higher outbound numbers; Zoll cited anecdotal factors such as established athletic ties, family connections and newer facilities.
In the action portion of the meeting the board voted to approve school‑choice applications 2026‑68 through 2026‑73 and to deny application 126‑74 (motion by Vincent; second Doctor Shire). The vote was carried by voice; no roll‑call tally was recorded in the public transcript.
The district will publish the application window on social media and by phone call to families; staff said probation letters and principal reviews will be distributed to parents following principal review in January.
