Board hears referendum construction update; major bids targeted for January

The Colliers presenter said the district has put the Haddonfield Memorial High School window project and a rebid of 1890s interior alterations on the street and is moving toward three large bid line items—Tatum and Haddon additions and the high school auditorium—targeting a January 15 bid opening and awards at the board’s January meeting. “We are out to bid for 2 projects,” the presenter said, describing a phased schedule meant to align procurement and construction activity.
Why it matters: the bundled bidding approach is intended to improve contractor competition and schedule coordination across several facilities projects. Colliers said code-driven fire-suppression requirements for second-floor educational additions have been added to the scope, and that fire-alarm replacements for several buildings will be advanced in separate packages.
Details and timing: Colliers said construction documents for the interior package were expected to be complete by Nov. 21 to meet the targeted Jan. 15 bid opening and permit award by the district’s Jan. 27 meeting. Contractors responding to early solicitations identified structural unknowns—especially the removal of a large chimney in the 1890s building—so Colliers said scope revisions reduced that risk without changing the plan’s intent. Window replacements may require 3–5 months for submittal reviews and fabrication once approved, which drives a lag between award and physical start.
Hopkins site sequencing: the firm described staged work at Hopkins—new turf, parking expansion and amenities—planned to limit disruption to existing parking and to coordinate curb work with county roadway authorities. Colliers said it expects contractor mobilization in March 2026 and substantial completion of the Hopkins field and lot in summer 2026.
Board follow-up: members pressed Colliers on coordination needs (county curb-cut approval), preservation sensitivity for historic facades, and the district’s plan to include fire-alarm replacement line items in later bid packages. Colliers said it will refine bid documents and coordinate with county and historic-review stakeholders before solicitations close.
What’s next: Colliers will return with updated bid specifications and revised schedules ahead of the Jan. 15 targeted bid opening. The board will consider award recommendations at the January meeting.
